News of Miss World returning to India has rekindled memories of the competition’s tumultuous history in the country, when in 1996, violent protests were fuelled over a fear that encompassed both western cultural imperialism as well as threats to the dignity of Indian women.
Members of an Indian feminist group threatened to commit mass suicide. Both right-wing politicians and left-wing student groups raised their voices together in opposition. Thousands of police were sent to Bengaluru to guard the pageant, which, due to safety concerns, relocated its swimsuit competition to Seychelles. One pageant protester died from self-immolation.
More than two decades since the chaos of the Miss World competition, what does hosting the contest mean for India today?
Indian beauty queens have long used pageants to build bigger careers in Bollywood and abroad. And more competitions are promoting ideas of female empowerment, freedom and leadership. But critics see the concept of a televised contest pitting women against each other based on narrow standards of beauty, evening gowns, and an interview question as a relic rooted in patriarchy.

India is misrepresented in Western Media so badly. Since I married my Indian husband in India 2 years back I recognised how much bullshit we learn at school.
Now I know that a lot of Indian doctors are better than stupid Austrian. The hostility and happiness and family orientation is beyond Westerns understanding. They dont care about money but about family and they would never leave their elder’s alone. Furthermore Indian are so smart in technology, maths or science and I love their decency. In India girls dont need to room around like prostitutes exposing most of their body. They still cover properly and dont snog in public.
I just dont like the fact that religion comes in between their kindness but nonetheless I want my kids to grow up with Indian culture rather than Western family ignorant, selfish, ethical racist lies.

Mid East women are also very pretty, but their society doesn't let me cone out, let them get groomed and educated with basic degrees, iam sure every year they will be the ones to win these paegants, don't simply highlight india in bad light, also highlight how women are restricted from basic human rights in mid East….
Miss World does a lot of charity work. A woman with a good personality and oratory skill win Miss Universe and Miss World
India had a female PM in 70s and this country has now a President from a tribal community
