A Year in My Life Competing for Miss America 👑 Miss Utah 2021 Sasha Sloan

Hello there! In this video, I mashed together scraps of horizontal footage from an entire year of my life to create a raw, intimate, documentary-style look at my year as Miss Utah. I didn’t add any music or fancy editing but included a variety of clips that showcase some of the highs and lows of one of the bizarre and iconic jobs in America. I loved watching “Road to Miss America” videos while growing up and dreamed about getting to be a part of something similar— here’s that vlog I always hoped I’d get to make!

A little more background information if you’re curious:
Miss America is a scholarship competition that empowers young women to engage in social activism. I competed for Miss Utah in 2018, 2019, and 2021, earning the title and job of Miss Utah 2021 and going on to compete at the 100th Anniversary Miss America competition. The social impact platform I promoted, Refugees Welcome, partnered with a national refugee advocacy group called Their Story is Our Story which uses storytelling to build cultural bridges. They work to instigate difficult conversations about inclusion and cultural awareness in Utah classrooms through research-informed curriculums.
As Miss Utah, I created a workshop in partnership with my friend Shurooq Al-Jewari discussing the challenges of exclusion related to mental health. We’ve spoken to hundreds of students across the state of Utah and continue to book speaking engagements across the country.
