In honor of International Women’s Day which is globally celebrated on March 8th, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office hosted a Women in Public Safety Symposium in collaboration with Stockton University. The event, coordinated and moderated by Dep. Dir. of Community Outreach Shavonne Davis, centered female professionals in varying public safety roles including high-ranking law enforcement officers, chief leaders of the judiciary, federal special agents, and leaders in victim services and civil rights spaces. Atlantic County Prosecutor, William Reynolds gave opening remarks and expressed his support for this initiative. The twelve panelists shared their powerful journeys as leading women in their fields while providing guidance as to the best ways in which young women and aspiring public safety leaders can pursue their own successful careers. The Symposium served as a space for our panelists to discuss the diverse experiences that shaped them, discuss the obstacles that they have overcome, and recommend ways in which they can be better supported as women in their fields. Panelists emphasized the significance of mentorship and a strong network of trusted colleagues, as well as the aspects of their jobs that make their work so rewarding. Two of four panels were moderated by Stockton University students, senior Mo Keane and sophomore Carlos Barralaga. This event also featured a myriad of public safety organizations tabled to provide recruitment and outreach. The Symposium was concluded by an exciting and encouraging keynote speech from the New Jersey First Assistant Attorney General Lyndsay Ruotolo, the highest-ranking female law enforcement officer in the state. The Prosecutor’s Office looks forward to hosting this educational and inspirational forum again to address the staggering minority of women in public safety roles and to highlight female leadership in these spaces.
