Beauty pageants have always had a disappointing lack of diversity, as history has proven time and time again that pageants favor women who embody Euro-centric beauty standards. Little black girls and black women have for too long been challenged to meet the Caucasian standards of beauty defined by skin color, hair texture, and facial features. But now at a time when representation has never been more mainstream, and diversity and inclusion are buzzwords for every big corporation and makeup brand, it’s refreshing to see that the needle is moving…a little. The current reign of Black Beauty Queens may not necessarily be considered a longterm shattering of the glass ceiling, but it is a historical and meaningful moment for us all to see the recognition of Black Beauty on such a large and influential scale.
…But this is something that we’ve known all along: We are bold. We are black. We are beautiful.
