Two years ago, at the age of 17, I stood on this stage anxiously awaiting to hear the results. I’ll forever remember sharing the moment with one of my competitors as she leaned over and whispered, “you’re going to be an amazing Miss Mount Pleasant Teen.” I laughed in disbelief, until I heard my name called, seconds later.

Just like that night, these past few years flew by and now, standing before you, at 19 years old, is a young woman who’s a testament of what this organization is capable of.
I always felt uncomfortable being called a “queen” because it often implies perfection or sophistication, and I don’t think those words accurately depict who I am. You’re looking at a hot mess express, and I’m okay with that. I wholeheartedly believe two of the most valuable assets a titleholder can possess are authenticity and vulnerability.

I’m not lying when I tell you I had zero idea what I was doing throughout my years of service. Starting with when I only wore a $3 dry CVS mascara to compete in this pageant or taught myself to play the piano since I didn’t already have a talent. Through the positive and negative experiences, I learned that sometimes, the most priceless moments in life are the most imperfect and unrehearsed.
While I didn’t necessarily have all the answers, I did know three things: I had a passion for service, a determination to advocate for Type 1 Diabetes, and a willingness to put myself out there. The rest would come with time.
I saw parts of myself in several different groups of people I encountered these past two years. Often times, when I interacted with children, many of them would hesitantly hide behind their mom before they warmed up to me. Well, they didn’t know it but I felt the same way sometimes. Being a titleholder doesn’t mean you immediately overcome your challenges and have all the confidence in the world. It’s more about facing your fears, so that those around you have the opportunity to hear what God has laid on your heart.

It takes a village to help you along the way and I’m incredibly blessed for mine. There were moments when I felt unworthy or defeated and my family- especially my mom and dad, LED, sister queens, Walker, and Cameron were there to pick me up. They were my reminder as to what initially sparked my interest for competing in the first place.

Speaking of, very quickly before they take this mic away from me, I want to touch on one more very personal subject, my social impact initiative. Eleven years ago, “Turning Type One Into Type None” came to life when my best friend was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes. Unlike Type 2, Type 1 Diabetes is NOT caused by intaking an excessive amount of sugar or being obese. Type 1 has no correlation with improper diet or the absence of exercise. Frankly, we don’t know what causes it. What I do know, however, is something that seems so “manageable” to most outsiders, can turn into a life-threatening situation extremely quick. Until you have a front row seat, you truly have no idea what all it entails.

Ultimately that’s my “why” and the reason for being given this opportunity despite my expertise lacking in hair, makeup, and wardrobe. Your passions are greater than any materialistic item you could be given, which is why with or without this shiny hat, you have the tools to chase your dreams.

To my successor, I’ll pass you along with this: your job isn’t to be perfect, it’s to be human. Walk in humility, be real, be you, that’s when you’ll be the most successful.
