Please react to the ballet documentary Ballet Russes for more ballet history!!
please go over 10 min, it helps the algorithm so much and we would all love longer content. šš»
Wow!!! That was really interesting!!!
Invite her back! This was fascinating.
Why so short! We want more!
I wish you would have made the video longer, it was so fascinating!
Please post full video!! Donāt care if itās super long š love it!!
Enjoyed this! Did you know that Bill Nye designed "a better Pointe shoe"?
Great video! That was so interesting, I hope you make more videos with Professor Fisher and other ballet historians. Would love to hear more about her collection and experiences!
About the brief mention about the myth that feet were smaller in previous times, there is an interesting video from Nicole Rudolph where she talks about that. She recreates historical shoes herself and has collected antique shoes for a while and has shoes from the 1820s to the 1920s and has done a decent amount of research on construction and shapes as well as the very prevalent myth that women had smaller feet historically. They actually did not! However, the shaping and styling is often very good at making big feet look small and the many shoes in museums do not represent the sizes that were very available at the time. You might enjoy her video from a few months ago, where she shows her shoe collection, talking about the transition from different styles and structures and another a bit further back where she talks about her experience of wearing her own handmade historical shoes over the last decade and another from 10 months ago which is totally about the myth of small feet "back then." This, of course, doesn't mean some women didn't have very small feet. Some still do. But some also had very large feet…I know my great grandmother, born in 1902, wore a modern US size 10 in a wide width (I don't know what her size was in the early 1900s, because the sizing was crazy back then and even varied from maker to maker) and was only about 5 feet tall. Anyways, thought you might be interested.
Are the feet really getting bigger or are the dancers getting bigger and bigger dancers have bigger feet? I think the bigger feet are more a result of body diversity.
I didnāt know any dancers tgat had elastics AND ribbon back in the 70ās and 80ās. When did this come in? (Personally i think it looks a mess but I am old fashioned).
Can Josephine look at Osipovas shoes , she butchers them (presumably to fit her bunions) i would love to see Josephine do a fitting for her just to see what shoe shr came up with.
I also recall Gamba pointe shoes having a small platform.
*Feet didn't get bigger, it was a vanity.thing, and shoes that survive were tiny and.huge sizes.
Shoes were made with thinner materials, eo they form to the feet more…think ballet flats versus doc martens
Hi Josephine,
My name is Cheryl and I am nearly 11
I am a rhythmic gymnast(but i am not really good at it
So why I am here
Because since I watch a Netflix show called ballerina
I am obsessed with ballet
I really want to go on pointe but I only learned a little bit of ballet
Is it true that you can not skip grades in ballet? Or you canāt go buy pointe shoes online to get tutorial from YouTube?
Because I really just want a pointe shoe and use it like I learnt it before
This was so great; I wish the video were longer!
How absolutely fascinating!! I will definitely be investing in her books too!
so sad that yelkow and blackface is still happening in europe š
for your next video you should react to this anime called "Dance Dance Danseur," š it's really entertaining and amazing in my opinion
This was such a great video! Please make more like this šš»
I loved this, so fascinating. If you have an extended version where the individual shoes are talked about in more detail, it would be great to see it.
Okay unrelated but she has the most gorgeous speaking voice ever š
Hahaha the captions introduced Josephine as "I'm juicy being".
You sould react to kids meet a ballerina!!
This was cool!!! Thx
Love this! Would love to have another video with Professor Fisher!!
So very Fascinating!! I actually have to have two different size pointe shoes that I wear, size 6 1/2 on my left, and a 7 on my right. It can get very expensive especially with the prices continuing to rise, I wear Nikolay 3007s, so about $98 per pair, (x2). Iāve been dancing en pointe for just over a year, and I am currently on my fifth pair, (I was originally wearing a medium shank, but on my last two pairs I have gotten a hard shank) meanwhile most of the other girls in my class are still on their first, maybe second pair. But anyways, Love you Josephine!!
I loved this. It was so interesting, please could you do more together?
Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the struggles and madness in this world today, God is full of justice, mercy and love.
Justice said we broke His perfect law – causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed – and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing – regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others – which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" – if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans
. The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom.
If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He will help us through the struggle, the stress, and anything we experience in the world. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves, we need Him to help us as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction).
He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place.
He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it.
He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way.
Christ says in John 16:33: I have told you these things, so that in Me you may haveĀ [perfect]Ā peace. In the world you have tribulationĀ andĀ distressĀ andĀ suffering, but be courageousĀ [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy];Ā I have overcome the world.āĀ [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.]

NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. Regardless of what you've done or what you're going through you CAN make it through Jesus.

I love love fashion history and ballet so this was a huge treat!
Please bring this sweet woman back and do more history lessons for us! I am a huge history buff and I loved this so much!
I love this so much! Please make this a series! š„°š
So fascinating!!! thank you for this video! itās amazing to see how pointe shoes began, and obviously the huge transformation from then to now, as ballet and pointe work has become more and more demanding.
Please do a part deux!
Me, an American: Heck yes we have big feet! Nutrition & muscles šŖ
Wonderful video and so interesting!! But, this could/should have been a lot longer. I kept having to pause to read the captions and try to get a better look at the shoes – that's what we're here for!
Could u react to the next step
I love all of your videos, but this is hands-down my favorite!! Thank you for that dip into shoe history! Those tiny shoes blow my mind!!!
also…why didn't she talk about the dance shoes of the 18th c (that could look like modern jazz shoes or even grecian sandals…)
dance historians always seem to alight upon marie taglioni and her era as the beginning of ballet when there was a century and a half of the art before her.
i'm surprised she didn't touch on the stylistic differences of the grave/demi-charactere/grotesque styles which predicated the national styles of france and italy, which in turn allowed for the development of pointe work.
so many of us focus on ballet technique being a single entity, but we tend to forget that it used to have three (four if you go back far enough) distinct forms with distinct technical challenges.
pointe work would have never existed without the intense training regimen of the italian grotesque school of ballet (little wonder that marie's father was italian…)
