I def think his half-sister not telling him was because he genuinely would not listen, but also the fact as how do you break something like that to a 12 year old? Miss Nurse was a child when she had him, too. How do you say that to someone? Especially when you're not sure if either are emotionally ready to accept each other? The possibility of him rejecting her, her incapable of actually taking care of him or miss nurses trauma coming back and making the situation worse is possibility and a huge risk. Its a tough situation to be in.
Half-sister was probably trying to find the best time to tell him, a responsibility she shouldn't even be burdened with. She's just an unfortunate bystander to her fathers horrendous crime. It's a sad place to be but I do like that she didn't stop her brother from beating him up. She knew her dad deserved it.

I don't know if anyone's already answered this for you, but you said But you didn't understand what barren meant. If a woman is barren It normally means she's infertile. She can't have kids. I'm guessing she wanted kids but couldn't have any.
When she said I am barren she's saying she can't have kids
