I once commissioned a piece from an artist friend, and joked about "think of the EXPOSURE!" when it came to payment – with "just kidding" on the same line of text, so she didn't get upset, and asked her what she wanted for it. Artists of all kinds have to deal with that crap for real all too often.
The "no replacement meal if you eat the first one" policy is standard, to the point it's weird to see stories about it.
Ah, yes. Being paid with "EXPOSURE!" I had someone who was running an event contact me to burn 8-10 hours of my time to shoot their event, 50 miles away (so 100 mile round trip), for "EXPOSURE!" My response back was something along the lines of since they found me I didn't seem to need any more exposure, and we could work out a rate. Silence.
