Iran is satisfied with India's response to a controversy over two Indian politiciansβ comments on the prophet of Islam Muhammad.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian visited New Delhi on June 8 to meet with Indiaβs Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. They discussed how to strengthen bilateral cooperation, and the Iranian diplomat described Iran-India ties as βvery good,β the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
The visit followed a controversy in India over criticism of Islam and the prophet Muhammad. In late May, the spokeswoman for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Nupur Sharma, criticized the Quran, the Islamic holy book, as well as Muhammadβs marriage to Aisha. Some scholars believe Aisha was a child when the marriage was consummated. Sharma was lashing out in response to the Gyanvapi mosque controversy, whereby a Muslim house of worship was built on the site of a Hindu shrine. The BJP suspended Sharma from the party, and she apologized. Several Middle Eastern states criticized India over the incident, including many Gulf states and Iran.
