Although my beautiful birth country of South Africa have been doing exceptionally well at Miss Universe for the past few years, this does not qualify us as a pageant “powerhouse”.

Women like Zozibini Tunzi (Miss Universe 2019), Tamaryn Green ( Miss Universe 2018 First Runner-Up), Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters ( Miss Universe 2017) and Rolene Strauss ( Miss World 2014), have certainly put South Africa back on the map in the pageant world in recent years, but is South Africa really Powerhouse pageant country?

I wouldn’t say so, because despite all of the success that South Africa has enjoyed at Miss Universe, Miss World and most recently, Miss Supranational – we still need to work on being consistently successful at Miss International, Miss Earth and Miss Grand International.

Consistency is what separates the powerhouse countries, like Venezuela, from the rest.

The Miss South Africa Organization have done great things in the past few years. But the rest of the South African National Pageant Organizers need to step it up and be on the same level as Miss SA in terms of International success.

It’s going to take a lot for South Africa to become a pageant “powerhouse” in the true sense of the word.

  1. You’re forgetting that we’ve had CONSTANT placements at Miss World and Miss Universe for the longest of times. Runners up at both MW and MU in the 90s and 2000s.

  2. But placing in the Alpha pageants is the big deal. If you won ten crowns each in Miss International and Miss Earth, but not winning World or Universe is no use.

  3. Hayibo….. Who said we are a powerhouse???? We have more pressing issues than trying be a pegeant powerhouse. We compete in the besr 3 pegeants not to prove anything to the world… We know who we are and south african women are strong, beautiful, magical and smart….. It is not our goal to be a peagant power house… We are not a peagant obsessed country. Most of our girls who went on to win these big pegeants were not brought up in a peagant culture. We dont have much of that is SA sisi. Awume kancane with tryn burst our bubble… We are pretty content with who we are, what we represent and what we achieve….

  4. South Africa seen very positively among powerhouse countries. Fans and commentators always put South Africa on their lists. SA may be a powerhouse but are invited to the VIP as Philippines' plus one lol.

  5. South Africa is not a powerhouse. Yet. But I believe in the context of Africa, South Africa is easily THE POWERHOUSE of the continent.
Definitely in MU & MW, South Africa is sash factor country, but they have yet to win Miss International, Miss Earth, Miss Supranational and MGI. But the way Nawat has been running his mouth, MGI should be disregarded.
All that said, South Africa is absolutely on it's way to becoming a powerhouse.

  6. Do you think theirs also a cultural undertones to the pageants that also impacts South African contestants Rina?? I remember watching Werner do an interview with Ashties and he even admits Miss International doesn’t really appreciate African beauty in the same manner?

  7. Honestly, miss earrh and supranational are small peagents. I wouldnt really bother sending my contestants there. Miss world or miss universe are the real thing. Im happy with miss sa org just focusing on the 2

  8. May not be a powerhouse… But it really gave us a scare by being at top 3 in MU in the last edition… She nearly had it… May not be the case earlier but now definitely the one to watch out for and the one to beat… Love and respect from India ❤️❤️❤️

  9. You have to compare apples to apples and not apples to oranges!
Venezuela won most of the international crowns in the 80's and 90's and their decline started in the 2000's and continues to date. All of their international crowns or a majority of them were won under the former National Director, Osmel, who used plastic surgeries – like how athletic competitors use steroids -as an ehancement – to catapult Venezuela's delegates above the other countries. Most countries, at the times Venezuela was relying on plastic surgeries, did not do plastic surgeries so Venezuela had better chances of winning international pageants and they did win!
At the advent of the internet, the winners of Venezuela's national pageant would look extremely physically different, when they arrived at the international pageants, from when they won the national pageant. Venezuela has not had that significant achievements from the 2000s to now.
In regards to the Phillipines, the country's sporadic placements, in the top 2 pageants, Miss World and Miss Universe, was horrendous prior to Pia's win, so them being considered a powerhouse is questionable.
South Africa has won 2 Miss World titles and 2 Miss Universe titles the latter victories in 3 years! Phillipines won the first first and only Miss World title in 20!5 and 4 Miss Universe titles the last 2 in 2015 and 2018 and comparing this result with Miss South Africa it seems similar; however, when you add South Africa's placements in the years between their top victories, South Africa comes out on top because in that time South Africa had a 1st runner, non-placement and a second runner-up but the Phillipines…semi-finalist at best except for 2021 top 5.
Finally, Phillipines's and Venezuela's other international wins do NOT make them a powerhouse because for true consideration and to give them that title, every countries to whom they are being compared should have representations in all the pageants that they have won and then the comparison will be apples to apples, rather than, comparing apples to oranges!

  10. You are right Rina. South Africa is not a pageant powerhouse. I think true pageant powerhouses are Venezuela and Philippines. And to some extent we may consider Puerto Rico, USA and India too to be pageant pwerhouses. Although India has not won Miss International.

  11. I agree. To become a pageant powerhouse, it literally takes decades. We are surely dominating, but not yet a powerhouse. I think people have different perspectives of what it entails to become a powerhouse.

  12. Am laughing 😂 so hard as I’m watching this video and thinking there must have been someone who said we are Powerehouse to make your blood 🩸 boil like this 😂
