In a time of social unrest and crimes against humanity, you’d expect celebrities – those with large followings, influence, wealth, resources, and fame to speak out against it, especially when their own government is backing the regime, but instead many key players have decided to stay silent or apathetic. Selena Gomez even recently said ‘a post won’t change the world.’

While other celebrities like Melissa Barrera and Bella Hadid have supported Palestine and the people of Gaza, unafraid of what it will do to do their careers.

In this video I delve into reasons why celebrities choose to stay silent in the name of injustice and pick and choose when they do have ‘influence’, and how by being ambivalent to their actions, we’re actually just helping them to feel comfortable in their complicity.

  1. I would argue celebrities ARE NOT people. They are people who play a celebrity role. Taylor Swift is a person, but Taylor Swift the celebrity is a brand, an amalgamation of publicists, marketing companies, advisors, etc, etc. No matter what Taylor the person believes privately, Taylor the celebrity can only present as much as the amalgamation can agree on is good for the brand. Celebrities are more-than-people.

  2. I’ll expand it further. We’re ALL obligated to speak. If not, who will?!

If I saw a child get followed by a grown adult and get harassed, I’m not “obligated” to do anything. Should I? Yes. But if I convince myself it is none of my business, I won’t. That child might get hurt because I didn’t help them, but I didn’t have to, so it’s okay. Right? That’s a big percentage of the population’s mindset. Remember this moving forward. People are NOT moving around life with well intentioned actions. Many people don’t have a will to help others and will excuse themselves. Wow. ☹️

  3. I think the reason I don't fck with a celebrity if they don't talk about palestine or any genocide happening now like in sudan or in congo is because I know their silence most probably comes from the fact they benefit from it. they're rich after all and what people with money do is invest and clearly seeing the bds list, all major international companies from literally every industry benefit from the occupation of palestine, from the war in sudan, from the war in congo, from the constant unrest in all african and middle eastern countries. so I absolutely do not trust any celebrity who feels hesitant about calling for a ceasefire. that's their admission they got money on the line.

  4. It's true that celebrities have the power to change things, but let's keep in mind that their interests aren't the same as ours! Taylor Swift, for example, is a Billionaire. She causes huge environmental harm with her god damm private jet. If she started actively making politics it wouldn't be to our benefit.

  5. It is so sad for me to see how much people can hate without knowing anything at all. Hamas a terror organization that said that there goal is "Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it" and now Hamas hold gaze is human shield. Palestinians organizations said themselves that the population in Gaze keep rising every year, so who is the real genocidal side in this conflict? Israel provide only 10% of Gaze water supply and 30% of Gaze electricity, the people of should have water and electricity Hama just steal form them all. More so the claiming that Israel torture prisoners is wrong just look at the prisoners the Israel released and tall me if they look like someone that has been tortured or staved?. In Israel if the government or the IDF commit a crime they are punished unlike Hamas, don't believe me? google line 300 case and Alor Azaria.

  6. thank you for reminding us that we all have a duty to help each other as best as we can – I donated a couple e-sims and some lunar new year's money to the children's relief fund – going to print out the e-sims fliers to post around town – none of us are free until all of us are free

  7. Before even seeing the video I do think a post can change the “world” specifically I refer to the posts the former president of the US would pull of course it changed a lot of dynamics between the public . Influencers/celebrities have more power than they think they do . They don’t owe us anything of course but when everyone is watching you unfortunately you will have the pressure to always speak up that comes with that job I don’t agree with it but again I don’t make the rules of society.

  8. Girl, I love your videos, you're probably my favourite youtuber in this area right now. I used to be a really big fan of Taylor Swift, when she came to brazil i travelled the country to watch her live, it was a very chaotic, we were going through a heat wave and a girl died while attending her concert. She said nothing about it, only a short cold note on a Instagram story, she didn't pay her any homage at the concert, didn't even say her name, and her family had to go to national tv begging for the fans to help transport her body back to where she was from, there's no proof Swift did anything but invite her family to another concert. Her fans worldwide seems to ignore this has happened, and makes me think if it was an american or even european fan it would have the same silence, silence from her, her team, the media, it just seems like our lives don't matter, the 3rd world lives are just not as important as americans. I used to think Taylor was a decent human being till that day, then i realized she probably doesn't care, when she talked about american elections was because maybe she thought it was safe enough for her to get envolved in this subject, would cause more good than harm or maybe because she cares about american politics, but what happens in the rest of the world? I don't think she gives a damn, and that was very sad to realize because I loved her and she said in her documentary that she wanted to take part in politics more often and she wanted to be in the right side of history. But she wants that only when it's convenient. That's all I had to say, great video. Free Palestine 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸

  9. I don't want to sound like a crybaby fan, but I have to say that Selena tried to talk about Palestine but the amount of hate she received was immeasurable. add this with the fact that she has psychological problems and you perhaps understand how harsh this becomes. Again, I'm not just coming here to defend her, it's bc I've been a fan of hers for many years and I know she's always taking a stand! she did it during the pandemic, warned about the importance of voting in the latest elections, not to mention that since she was young she has been committed to UNICEF. saying that she is an empty and apathetic celebrity is very unfair.

That being said, Melissa Barrera has all my respect and I sincerely hope that one day justice will be done and she will be able to be in another hit movie (what comforts me is knowing that Scream will be a failure without her).

  10. i might be in the minority here, but at the end of the day the same way we have the freedom to either speak up or be silent or pick a side so do those celebrities forcing them to speak up is more wrong, my issue is how some people view silence or being neutral as a form of cardinal sin, that they have committed something really wrong by doing nothing, that silence is violence and neutrality is the side of the oppressor and we forget that a person who could live his or her daily life might have a thousand things going on there life that if they spoke up it should be commended when it comes naturally from the person him or herself and not forced out by people.

  11. Free Palestine and free all indigenous people around the world 🍉 so many communities are going through genocides right now the Kurdish people , Uyghurs in china , Congo , Sudan , Yemen and so many other countries and communities who deserve freedom and peace and the least we can do is learn about their history and what is happening and talk about it

  12. i've been a swiftie since 2009 and since the last couple of months just lost all respect for taylor. i still listen to the music but cannot pretend that taylor is a good person imo

  13. Honestly, I think any form of help is good even if it comes from vanity. As long as they do something right instead of looking away, I don't really care for the reasons behind it

  14. I don’t know how so many people feel no shame – when someone asks what did you do when civilians were targeted and killed in front of the whole world? I feel so small and impotent, but I cannot bear to not at least read a bit, share on my story a bit, attend a protest or two a bit… How can people not care???
