I think it’s a combination of the two. I think they were mentally and emotionally abused (not sure about physically) AND they wanted all the money. 🤷🏼♀️

definitely they killed their parents which is obviously horrible, but i have mixed feelings about this case because of their abuse. i was abused as a kid and i know how hard it is to grow up in such a horrible environment. but just because you were raised poorly doesnt mean you get to kill people. you get to choose how act and they didnt make the right choice. i do feel for them, but i think they deserve a punishment for killing.

I saw everyone talking about how wildly inappropriate the skit was… y’all were not lying! Once I saw it I was disgusted. They are really making fun of these two men who were sexually abused their whole life, and acting as if it costed nothing to the brothers? Absolutely disgusting.
with that type of father and that type of abuse. i fully believe that their mental state was sooo damaged that that was the only way out they saw. It's sad that the whole abuse allegations were literally just disregarded.
Was murdering wrong? of course. But they were seriously damaged. They should serve jail time, yes. but not life. And they should also get psychological help. If jail time is supposed to make people better humans, then mental help is definitely a must. And they should get it.

To be honest i don’t believe them… if they were sexualy abused they would have told the therapist something… or someone else…they also were good at acting in the beginning whit the cops and now in the court…mmm sus to me
They are definitely guilty of murdering their parents no doubt about it but I believe they are also victims of lifelong abuse at the hands of their parents.

I believe the brothers. Especially with them being so young and not realizing the outcome of their actions. They had never been held accountable for anything. I think the public perception has greatly changed bc at the time, child abuse especially in that way was not talked about. Now we know how often it happens to even seemingly normal families. That’s why you never goes on behind closed doors. They looked like they were living this fabulous life and he’s had money but had their childhoods ripped from them. We see it now in much greater numbers bc of social media. Everyone is posting a highly curated, highly polished view of their life that isn’t reality. It’s a few seconds or a picture.

Why don't those of you who are so convinced that the brothers were lying, as was I at the time, take the time to watch the trial itself? It's available on YouTube and I've now watched it.

As one of the people who was severely manipulated by the media into believing that these brothers were as guilty as hell and now understand just how wrong I was, I think people should also read the hundreds and hundreds of comments here, from people who were sexually abused as children. They clearly recognize the signs of abuse in the Menendez brothers.
I feel like I owe the brothers a HUGE apology for having allowed myself to be manipulated by the lying corporate media.

I was around when this happened. It was one of the first cases publicized on Tv. That really hurt them I think. Back then we omly knew what our parents and teachers taught us or what the news told us. Life without social mefia was a lot different. I dont think with the publicity surrounding the case that they had a fair trail. It was like a huge media event. It was crazy.

For everyone saying they only wanted the wealth or they were abused… Why not both? Perhaps they felt the money was something they were owed as compensation for years of abuse, both mental and physical.
A sad study on whether sociopathy can be genetically inherited. Father raised them as brats and then bullied them for being brats. He replaced love they should have gotten from him with money, and in the end, they proved that they learned their lesson well—money really was more important to them than love. He had no empathy, and neither did they. It still doesn't excuse terrifyingly brutal murder, especially of their mother. And….narcissists lie very well, they can get Oscars for their displays of "genuine grief".

Wouldn’t Erik have told about the abuses to his psychiatrist? I think that if the defense didn’t get any recordings or testimony from the doctor, then, it might have been fabricated. I don’t know, just a thought. Very sad story anyway.

I don't think the boys were lying about the abuse but they clearly had some very problematic behaviour from their past and were very much raised with that entitlement that they thought they could get away with anything. Now, I don't think that this is necessarily their fault since calling their parent's horrific is an understatement, I do believe if they did not do this, they would have done something else. Their behaviour and thought process reminds me of a lot of other people in the media who did some pretty bad things because they thought they were untouchable. Unfortunately, they are victims of circumstance and this is a story all too familiar with people who commit horrific crimes. I definitely think they deserved prison time but they deserved serious psychological support just as much, maybe an institution that houses criminals whose psychological wellbeing had a significant role in their crimes would have been better.
I feel like I shouldn’t say my opinion as I could get bashed for it
