People develop a dependence and sometimes an addiction on those activities that increase neurotransmitters. Dopamine, Serotonin, Norepi is the short list. As we get older, we need more of these to feel the same as when we were younger so we are more likely to turn to food, drugs or illicit behavior as these synapses don't fire because we're lacking in the amount of various of these neurotransmitters. Its good that she was able to overcome food, but it will always be a struggle because of the way she is wired. (To no fault of her own).
