  1. Sovereign lets be reasonable now… No young queen in development will risk that potential negative exposure. It may be professional suicide. Though, I think the responsibility rest on the past crown winners. Zozi, Pia, Catriona just to name a few… I think Anna's comment is a threat to all pageant systems.

  2. my response to that journalist 😄

Miranda Priestly: This “stuff”? Oh, okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you.

You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don’t know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean.

You’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn’t it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic “casual corner” where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of “stuff.”

  3. Kudos to every point you are making… except one: the pressure you are putting on the queens to defend themselves, their platforms, etc. The queens – especially those in the midst of their reign, are at the behest of their directors, sponsors, etc. By speaking up and drawing attention to themselves in an adversarial way, they could put their title at risk. Moreover, if a queen holds one title and is seeking another title in the future, she could poison her chances of winning a future crown. This is where the directors are responsible.

I live in the USA, and I understand that those living in another country may have a very different experience, but I have NEVER seen a news report of a beauty queen raising money for a cause, raising awareness for a cause, doing humanitarian work, etc. The only time I hear about what beauty queens are doing is during a pageant.

The (American) National Football League (NFL) does a good job of promoting the humanitarian work of its players. The fact that many players are also known for domestic violence, drug abuse, and other illegal behavior off of the field, yet the league is still known for its good work, speaks to the way that NFL promotes itself far better than any other pageant does, at least in the USA. Pageant directors need to learn from professional sports leagues. Of course, that's a big ask, given that MUO still doesn't seem to understand that putting up a contestant's bio on the official website means something. I'll stop before I digress… but my point is that I don't want to see queens being blamed or asked to justify themselves – directors and sponsors, step up.

  4. it’s so unprofessional for a so-called “journalist” to leave neutrality and just speak her opinion as facts and absolute truth and call that “News” like, “today you’re gonna sit here and listen to me speak about what I personally define as correct and also about whom I believe are positive role models for today’s youth”. ir literally doesn’t make sense to me how has she made it this far on national tv. Where is the proper research?, where is the space for the audience to make their own conclusions based on the FACTS that you’re supposed to be exposing…She is just basing her opinion on fake stereotypes, she hasn’t even taken the time to listen to one of these women and what they stand for. I wish she would at least open-up for a live debate with the same women she is underestimating like Elle Smith, Chelsi or even you Davonna. I’m 100% sure they all have some powerful counter arguments to throw into the conversation.
