The family of Maya Kowalski, the subject of Netflix’s “Take Care of Maya,” allege that a report of child abuse from Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital led to Beata Kowalski taking her own life. The Kowalski’s are suing doctors, the Department of Children and Families, and Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital for $200 million dollars in connection to Beata’s death. According to court documents, the child abuse case against Beata was pushed forward after Maya’s physician confirmed her condition, complex regional pain syndrome, was not the fault of her parents. During the time Beata was separated from Maya, she took her own life.

  1. Mya was ALREADY being treated. She went to the ER because her pain was so bad she had to. She didn’t need them to wean her off anything. That’s for her regular Drs to decide. She needed pain management ASAP PERIOD. So sick of the system these days.

Because of the opioid epidemic it’s harder for ppl who need pain managed to get that help. I’ve encountered it myself.

  2. For Mya to be angry enough to curse just proves they’re not controlling her pain n she’s desperate at that point. And the fact her Mom said “at least if u have a heart attack they will finally treat u” AGAIN PROVES she was uncomfortable. These Women all made snap judgements about her n punished her for it. “She was on her knees n I thought hmm that’s suspicious” SHES NOT PARALYZED

Every symptom is not constant 24/7. Glad these Women are exposed. The fact she keeps bringing up CANCER PATIENTS n the lawyer mentions the pain scale n CRPS is above that was a mic drop moment. Glad the little guys won.

  3. She didn’t say she had an owy? Cause a mature 10 yr old who’s been through numerous tests with different hospitals, doctors n specialists FINALLY knows what’s wrong with her n what helps so she asks for that n is crucified AND PUNISHED for it. BTW My kids also will express themselves more when Mom is there vs when I’m not. Because Mom will speak up for them!

  4. I watched “Dr Michelle Smith” looking smug and shaking her head during closing arguments. How does it feel now, Dr Smith? You were WRONG. You and the other so-called doctors and nurses at the hospital owe this family an apology. Regardless, your hospital has shown what it’s really like! And I’m glad people see that.

  5. My kids hold it together at school, and the minute they get in the car all of their emotions come pouring out. I’m their safe space. That’s the way it should be. I was the same with my parents and still am that way with my husband. Every single nurse or doctor involved in this shouldn’t be in this field any more. Not an ounce of compassion was shown to this poor girl and her family.

  6. Idk, the argument that the kid is asking for sedation doesn't really perturb me, because she has a nurse for a mother, so her mother likely uses medical terms all the time around her and she's a very bright child, so she's likely to use medical terms because she understands them.

  7. It sucks even when something is "in your head", you still FEEL it … Your brain feels the pain. So, pretend it's in her head… Shes still experiencing it, and placebo is powerful.
I still doubt she was faking it.

  8. The hospital Keeps saying they offered counseling and psychological services when the family came in for stomach pain because they did not understand mom and maya’s relationship they labeled them as crazy and made decisions based on their bias assumptions.

  9. Most 10 year olds aren’t going to say I have an ouchie . This once size fits all approach to to nursing is so outdated where do they find these nurses . Painting maya out to be some linda Blair swearing and thrashing on the bed.

  10. Saying you dont know why you’d tell a social worker that a child was swearing out due to pain and aggravation (if she actually did) COMPLETELY undermines the role of a social worker. Ugh!

  11. Is it possible that her heart rate was lower ( not showing reaction to her pain as a normal child ), because of the meds given to sedate her Ie.. propofol, ketamine, etc. i believe the normal evidence nurses were use to like heart rate blood pressure etc, were giving false signals making it appear she was not in pain.

  12. I'm catching up on this trial. Several people were dumbfounded by Dr. Teppa-Sanchez sitting at the defense table in the chat. She was there all day and had been there previously also as the hospital's "corporate representative." Just my opinion, but this feels like an underhanded move by the defense to get one of their star witnesses a chance to see the trial first-hand before she testifies. I think I've got 10 more days to catch up, but I'm assuming she won't be there again after this.

Side note….if she stopped caring for Maya months prior and didn't follow the case afterwards, why did she agree in the text message that they did the right thing for Maya? What was she agreeing with as being the right thing, and how was she involved with it? There's my unasked pseudo-juror question.

  13. This PICU MD stayed Maya clearly suffering. My issue is not with many of the doctors it’s issue with a few staff, especially SW and overall running of hospital and what was lacking.

  14. I try to look only on the facts but I work in health care and miss Klink gave some very weird answers in my opinion. also way too dramatic talking, had experiences with co workers like her, I can't trust her. the defense shouldn't have brought her on the stand, she's not helping them.
