  1. 2017: I really liked Demi's national gown and look. Wasn't a fan of her MU prelims, but loved her MU finals look!
2018: I loved all 3 of Tamaryn's gowns–she's one of my favorite Miss SA ever! Her MU prelims gown reminded me more of Wendy Fitzwilliams' gown than Oxana's, though.
2019: I loved Zozi's MU gowns, both for prelims and finals–she was a knockout, particularly at finals.
2020: I loved Natasha's both looks and gowns. Still can't believe she didn't place!
2021: I loved how beautiful and classy Lalela looked in her white national prelims' gown. I liked, but didn't love the other gowns; but she looked great.

  2. I love that South Africas gowns year on year challenge this standard sparkly and boring expected gown. From Zozi to Natasha then Lalela its nice to have memorable gowns.

  3. MISS UNIVERSE SOUTH AFRICA 2018 IS STUNNING AND SHE'S REALLY SO PRETTY! NOT WHITE, NOT BLACK IT'S JUST BROWN SKIN BUT IN REHEARSAL SHE BECAME DARK 🙄😱😱 TAMARYN IS SO PRETTY!

  4. Hey Dani, thanks for always showing such support, kindness, respect and researched knowledge of South African pageantry and our contestants. We REALLY appreciate it! It is no wonder you are by far the most popular paegent influencer amongst South Africans, myself included, and with good reason! You would be such a valuable judge if given the opportunity, which I would love to see happen.

    A few fun facts about our gowns. Typically they fall in three categories (IMO);

Old Hollywood Glam (Demi at Nationals and Universe Prelims and Finals, Natasha at Prelims, Tamryn in MU finals, although that whitish silver dress could also fall in next category…

Ethereal Goddess (often in white, e.g. Tamryn at Nationals and arguably also MU finals?, Zozi at Nationals and Lalela at Nationals); and lastly

Reagal Queen (typically with African elements, e.g. Zozi at MU Prelims and Finals, and Lalela at MU Prelims and Finals (funny how you mentioned Candice Swanepoel from SA re Tamryns finnal MU dress, I could picture her in Lalela's prelim dress!), and Natasha's unseen "Zebra dress" for MU Finals)

Fun fact: South Africa's national sport's colours are GREEN and GOLD, so you see that a lot as it is a sublte nod to national pride. Even Demi's final walk was in Green and Gold, which annoyingly, people assumed was an Aquaman reference. But Demi's two green dresses, as well as Natashas green and teal dresses were all (again, just my opinion) subtle nods to the green in our national sports colours! At least in my mind! Whereas Demi and Lalela at MU finals for example, sustained this tradition by referencing the Gold in our nationl sports colours. Zozi's final dress actually refetenced both a greenish blue and gold! As was Demi's final walk dress. The irony isn't lost on me, so it HAS to be deliberate and in my opinion, a lovely sentimental touch.

No one has ever mentioned this national sports colour reference out loud! It's just my observation, and at the very least an interesting "coincidence" or subconscious decision by Werner. South Africans love their rugby and cricket, especially amongst Afrikaans speaking South Africans (like Demi and Natasha).

I think white is a popular choice as SA is a beacon of peace in the continent and the world; just think of Lalela's Dove of Peace national costume at MU.

And we love up cycling dresses: it's very progressive which is typical South African. Honestly given the thought we put into our dresses it is rather groundbreaking!

Anyway, hope this gives you some context!

Curious to see what Shudu will wear at MW; I know for a fact it's a showstopper, but I suspect she is going to go for ethereal goddess… Just a hunch. Or maybe Regal Queen -. She can pull of both, but I'm leaning towards ethereal goddess like in her final walk at Miss SA 2021 . And 90% sure she's going to take that blue crown… Especially as her BWAP is all about mental health, and after the heartbreaking tragedy of the lovely Cheslea (that still DEVASTATES me), her platform is more relevant than ever! Keep an eye out for Shudu…

    Much love from Cape Town!
    Anton

  5. Werner once showed a video of Lalela trying on the golden gown in one of the fittings and the mesh actually matched her skin color! I have no idea why they changed it.😭

  6. Demi in the green prelim gown was my favorite by far! Not in love with the white prelim gown of Lalela's. But looking forward to our next local pageant to see who our next rep will be!

  7. South Africa always slays with evening gows and brings something different and meaningful to the stage. The gowns all have a story behind them and arent just gowns

  8. Natasha explained the reason for the gloves with her prelims dress- it was to honour the frontline workers during the COVID-pandemic. Furthermore, the colour of her dress is dark teal, her favourite colour. Essentially, her prelims dress resembles her and a relevant topic at the time.

  9. I loved the 2017 Miss Universe competition and Demi's journey/her as a representative. That and the Miss Universe 2018 competition make me most emotional, of all of the competitions.

2021's final evening gown is beautiful in that it makes me think of something ancient Egyptian royalty would wear. But, yes, I think mesh that blended with her skin tone would look much better. Loved this video!

  10. yesss this is what we want😍😍 more of other COUNTRIES🙌🏼 not just philippines philippines philippines, I believe other countries are beautiful as well and unique in their own way… not just about powerhouse

  11. I truly think that Natasha’s gown really cost her placement. I still think that it looked like a circus costume. It wasn’t elegant at all. It was a shame because she is soooooooo gorgeous and was one of my picks for top 5 minimum. 😍😍😍😍😍

  12. I love Demi-Leigh, I think she was super stunning at the Miss Universe pageant and that is why she won. On a side note, I see that the MU organization uploaded a video from Harnaaz and she is being attacked for what appears to be a little bit of weight gain. Have you heard anything about it? I don't social media so all I get to see is what is uploaded on you toobe. I think its awful. On edit: I also was totally rooting for Tamryn, she was my favorite at the 2018 MU pageant because I thought she was super stunning as well.
